A stallion that is dominate for a gene will pass the dominate gene most of the time even if they only have one copy of the gene. |

Trying to decide on what time of year to breed? |
check your registry. Do the horses turn 1 yr old on January 1st? and are going to be competing in young horse events? then you will want to consider breeding for an early foal. |
Ask the wrong question get the wrong answer. |
Do mares get pregnanat in the winter? Mare do not fully cycle in the winter, unless they are under lights. Correct Question: How many mares do you know that have foaled in the middle of winter? One neighbor put an open mare in with her stallion in January and had a foal in December. Another had a mare stabled with a shared fence, an oops later, mare had a foal in November. Another left an open mare stalled next to the stallion and did a planned early breeding for a March foal. |
Lights or No Lights? |
Lights make for a more dependable early breeding schedule. If you are planning and early breeding using AI, lights are basically a must. |
Listen to your instincts. |
When making your list of likes and dislikes about each stallion, remember to include a line for what your instinct is telling you. |
Read all contracts before signing. |
Always carefully read the contract. |

Make a list of items, check each contract for those items. Don't be afraid to ask a stallion owner to adjust a contract if you have specific concern. |
Shipped Semen contracts. |
Carefully read the contract offered, some things to look for are: extra costs associated with semen collection, is the stallion current on shots, container rental costs, and pregnancy rate of stallion offering. In many cases taking a look at stallions offering these services can expand your available selection of stallions. |
